Junior Alexa Lutin has a tough time balancing academics and sports year–round, not only enrolled in college courses but managing personal day-to-day responsibilities.
Lutin is experiencing an amount of stress and a decline of sleep that many young adults struggle with around the country. “Findings indicate that stress in the classroom environment affects children’s likelihood of exhibiting learning problems,” The Washington Post reported on June 10, 2011.
Demonstrating that maintaining grades and being able to perform to the best of ones’ abilities can be very challenging.
Lutin’s starts her day at 6:00 a.m. and arrives home at “like six thirty–ish” spending almost 12 hours at school. Then she begins her school assignments at 8:00 p.m. giving Alexa a few hours to either complete homework or focuses on personal responsibilities.
“It gets stressing because your like, ‘oh my, my grade is going down what I’m I going to do,’” Lutin said.
This school year Alexa has made the transition from playing three sports all school round to only two, one during the fall season and another during the spring season. In hopes to make this school year more balanced and relaxed.
Lutin has a full schedule packed with honors academic classes, clubs that are all year-round in addition to her athletic load. “Yah I don’t want to say it does [impact academics] but then somehow it does affect you cause you maybe focuse more on that [athletics],” Lutin said
Lutin and other students can be affected by the ability of not having sufficient time to complete or give enough effort towards either their athletic or academic goals.
Despite the challenges a full schedule can present, Lutin offers words of encouragement. “Don’t stress, obviously, even if it gets harder your teachers always tell you to communicate so always ask for help.”
